Wrap up warm and watch Shefford light up as the annual Christmas lights display gets switched on at the end of November / beginning of December. Hundreds of spectators line the streets of Shefford to watch the Christmas lights being turned on. Wherever possible Shefford Town get a reasonably high profile local community member to turn on the lights from a local councillor, a Trust Fund or Charity Organiser, and it always is a pensive but fun moment to see them switch on after a countdown by the watching children and "big children"!
A dazzling array of colours brightens up those dark winter nights when the display goes live starting outside St Michael's and All Angels Church in the High Street and winding round the buildings on the High Street, Northbridge Street and Southbridge Street.
Every year it is an impressive display and seems to get better and more colourful each year. It brings the town to life to celebrate Christmas and brightens everything in the midst of winter. Everyone enjoys it!
Events vary each year surrounding the grand switching on celebration. In the recent past years there has been carol singing, roundabouts for the children, a performance from lay reader Jenny Dann, the playing of the organ, and the local Shefford Scouts have provided hot food and drinks as do Robert Bloomfield Middle School. There has also been a visit from Father Christmas on occasions, when he isn't too busy, who hands out sweets to children.
The display has grown and been designed over the years by a dedicated team of qualified installers and helpers integral to this are the Shefford Fireworks Appeal who give up their time over 2 to 4 weekends to get the lights up. The light show now consists of more than half a mile of cable and rope lights with 40 large displays and 50 smaller ones, redesigned each year to give that story and variety with newer designs and replacements added to the collection each year. And don't forget they all have to be taken down and packed away every January.
So if you are around in December... come and see the unveiling and marvel at of the illumination of Shefford Town Centre during the Christmas Season.
